Is Volleyball Serving Like Baseball Pitching?
My argument is that, in baseball, pitchers only throw balls that would be considered 'strikes' about 2/3 of the time. The rest of the time they throw balls outside the strike zone. For many reasons. Some are simply misses due to the fact that they are throwing at the very edge of their limits of control and accuracy. Some are deliberately outside the strike zone. Some are outside the zone but the batter swings anyway. The point is that, in order to get the batter out within the prescribed time, pitchers throw 1/3 of their pitches outside the zone.
Consider that the Strike Zone serves the same purpose as the Court in volleyball.
In volleyball, servers who are at the very limit of their control and accuracy, miss the target of the court about 2/5 of the time. Sometimes these misses force the passer to play the ball anyway. The rest of the time they directly lose the point. But the point is worth only a small fraction of the set they are trying to win
If pitchers and servers changed their strategy and ensured that 100% of attempts were in the court/zone what do you think would happen? The difficulty of the pitch/serve would go down and hitters and setters would be loving life as they get to run easy plays all game!
Serve errors are part of volleyball in the same way as 'balls' are in baseball. Miss too many and you won't win but you have to risk at the very edge of your ability or you won't win either.
Here is a recent example of the incredibly stressful and awful balance of not making an error but not making it easy for the other team to win the point,.
